Ambassador for Christ

Ambassador for Christ

by Lorenz Alipio

When you come to faith in Christ, God grants you citizenship in the Kingdom of Heaven. It’s as though the Holy One hands you a passport and declares that you are stamped with His approval.

The passport is a document of belonging. Your passport shows where you are from and what country claims you as their own.

When you come to faith in Christ, God grants you citizenship in the Kingdom of Heaven. It’s as though the Holy One hands you a passport and declares that you are stamped with His approval. What a joyful moment! Then God tells you even more good news: You are now commissioned to be an ambassador for Christ.

How should you carry out this important assignment?

First, you can reflect the light of God’s love to everyone you meet. As Matthew 5:16 says, “Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” Second, you should approach everyone with gentleness and respect. The Bible encourages us to “always be prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you, yet do it with gentleness and respect” (1 Peter 3:15).

Ambassadors for Christ are called to represent God with love, gentleness, and respect.

But how can we do that? Well, when we travel to another country, we learn about the culture, values, and taboos of the place. We can use the same techniques when encountering nonbelievers.

Thankfully, it doesn’t take a lot of effort to understand people who are still “of the world”, since we ourselves have fallen short from obedience! Once we remember our own sinful ways, it’s easier to connect with people who are caught in their own sins. Then we can approach them with the same love and patience that God displayed towards us.

As Christ’s ambassadors, it is our job to share the Good News of God’s saving love. However, it is not our job to change anyone’s hearts or minds. That is the work of the Holy Spirit. Every time we share our faith, we should trust God with the outcome. We may not see the results in this lifetime, but that’s okay: Being an Ambassador for Christ is an eternal assignment!
